Retirement Defined
Hmm, I’m not sure I can simply define retirement as it means very different things to different people.
I think age of retirement changes your perception of retirement. If you retire at age 30, can you stop yourself from doing some form of work that earns you money. Perhaps some people just want to play and spend their money, but young minds can’t help themselves from wanting to create something, build something, and profit from it.
You see this all the time with young entrepreneurs who sold their Internet startup. Once they become rich and famous they can’t help starting up another venture or consulting for other startups. In fact it seams once they are able to retire they actually end up working even harder, even though they don’t have to.
My point being that semi-retirement might be a better option for a younger person.
Some people would prefer to work really hard until they have a sizable nest egg and then completely stop working. Completely enjoy life without concern for making any additional income. Some believe that retirement means you have made all the money you need for your lifetime and through retirement you will spend the money you’ve earned, so that your money will run out right as you reach the end of your life. That’s what most financial planners do for retirement planning. They guess how much you’ll spend per year and guess how long you’ll live and decide you need x amount of dollars in your account at a certain age in order to retire with the life you want.
Retirement can mean not clocking in and out to earn a measly paycheck that just makes ends meet, or it can mean having enough financial freedom from ever having to work again.
Throughout this site you can learn about programs that will fit your needs. There are many people that keep a 9 to 5 job and then earn additional income in their spare time, until they are able to retire. This retirement certainly comes earlier than if they just kept their 9 to 5 job, and usually results in a much larger nest egg when they do retire. Others just can’t stand to work a regular job. While they don’t have enough cash stored away to stop working, they can make enough money on their own that they can live a more enjoyable life and still save for the future.
